(Hemerocallis)
No plant has experienced such an explosion of
varieties as has the daylily in the last 40 years. Thousands of new names
have appeared and the colours and flower varieties are breathtaking. It is not
unusual for newly developed daylilies to sell for hundreds of dollars apiece.
Some of these are truly different, while others are indistinguishable from their
cheaper cousins unless you get within 12" of the plant. The level of
expectation when you spend $200 on a single plant is, to say the least, high.
We
have chosen to offer varieties that are a little older and a lot cheaper. While
we are not without passionate obsessions (Bamboo, Persian carpets), daylilies
are not one of them. We love them and extensively use them, and so should you.
We hope you find some varieties to your liking.
To
help with the nomenclature: Extended bloom means that each bloom stays open
longer than one day - usually opening in the evening and remaining open the next
day. Re-bloomer means that a plant will bloom once, have a rest, and then bloom
again. Climatic conditions, seasonal weather variations and general plant health
all play a factor in a plant's ability to re-bloom. Always fertilize your plants
immediately after each bloom period.
Daylilies
grow and flower best in full sun. They will, however, tolerate some shade. Mulch
always with 5-6” of well-draining mulch in winter in Zones 3 & 4; and
everywhere else, except coastal BC, the first winter. Remove mulch away from
crowns in spring. Evergreens are a bit less hardy and a bit later to start
growing in spring. They need excellent drainage and lots of heat.
Plant
as soon as you receive your order
in a wide planting hole, amended with bone meal, rotted manure and some balanced
fertilizer. Soak the entire plant in water for 1 hour before planting.
Spread out the roots and plant the crowns about 2" below the soil surface. Water
Well
after planting and do not let dry out until they are established. Once
established, daylilies are relatively drought tolerant. Do not trim foliage in
the fall - leave until spring when the ground thaws.
Reality
Check - With over 40,000
registered varieties, there is going to be some interpretation in descriptions.
Reds do not always look like Santa’s suit and pinks are not like the icing on
your birthday cake. Yellows are usually the purest of colours and the lavenders
are also fairly true. The height of the flower stalk and vigour are accurate.
Evergreen varieties may in fact look like fresh compost in cold, wet climates.
This is not to discourage you. We just get a bit tired of photographs taken
through filters or special lights, and descriptions that sound like snake oil
ads.
SHIPPING:
Daylilies
